Choosing the finish is a matter of design and function.
Flat and Matte both have a non-reflective finish; matte has a very low luster. These finishes help to reduce any imperfections on walls by providing no reflectivity. Both can be used in most areas due to most suppliers now provide washable paint products.
Eggshell and Satin Eggshell is shinier than matte but still has a soft look. Satin is more lustrous and silky. Theses finishes are easier to clean and stands up to washing. They are recommended for high-traffic areas such as the bathroom, kitchen or a kid’s bedroom. They can also be used on both walls and trim.
Semi-gloss is the shiniest of the sheens. Paints with this finish are formulated to fend off stains and are usually a cinch to clean. Sticky fingers and moisture from steamy showers pose no problem. Semi-gloss is a great choice for highlighting trim and doors. Extremely smooth, well-prepped surfaces are a must.

We've had many years to perfect our skills. This is another area where it shows.
Different kinds of wallpaper require different handling techniques. Most modern wallpapers are solid vinyl or vinyl-coated and called "strippable" because, when the time comes to replace them, the top layer of vinyl peels off with a tug, leaving the paper backing.
Specialty wallpapers, however, may be made of foil with paper backing or Mylar with paper backing. Many of these are not strippable and require lots of elbow grease to remove. Some wall coverings even require a separately mixed adhesive.
Once you've made your choice, make sure the rolls you've selected share the same dye lot. When you get home, unfurl each roll to look for defects, such as paint smears and holes. Return the defective rolls as soon as possible so you can replace them from the same dye lot.
Before hanging wallpaper, it's important to prep the walls, if you've just removed wallpaper we always recommend that you remove all old wallpaper before you hang the new stuff you need to wash off all the excess paste with warm soapy water. Apply a recommended primer suitable for wallcoverings to help the glue grip better.

Popcorn or stucco ceilings, commonly installed in residences beginning in the 1950's, reached their peak of popularity in the late '70s. In 1978, ceiling stucco was banned in the U.S. because some of it contained asbestos, a proven carcinogen. Understandably, textured ceilings soon lost their appeal. Designers later introduced the concept of clean, smooth ceilings consisting mostly of drywall.
Fortunately for those who still have popcorn ceilings in their homes, the material is easy to remove.

The best stains are water-based and contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than solvent-based products. So you can get a durable finish and easy cleanup with a product that pollutes less.
Solvent-based finishes are often considered the standard or traditional finish. These finishes have proven to do their job well, and have the fastest working times as well as being easy to work with. They provide a brilliant glossy shine that can withstanding years of wear and tear.
The flip-side of this is that the process of making the solvent-base involves harsh chemicals. These chemicals have led to the biggest disadvantage of using a solvent-base; dangerous fumes and an overwhelming odor. Taking in these vapors can have adverse effects on the users' health as well as the environment. That's why the industry has been working hard to offer a cleaner alternative, such as water-based finishes.
Flat and satin finishes are usually applied to the body of the house; semi-gloss, to doors, windows, trims, and shutters for added protection and visual interest.
